PTW: Since becoming a survivor, you’ve dedicated yourself to sharing your story and advocating for an end to human trafficking. How have you found empowerment through telling your story?

RB: Telling your story can be incredibly cathartic and therapeutic for anyone. What I have found empowering is being able to say, “all of this isn’t for nothing” and then creating calls to action and trainings through story that helps make an impact in communities!

PTW: Sharing the difficult parts of your life can make you feel vulnerable and exposed. How have you learned to embrace vulnerability as you’ve gone through the journey of sharing your story with the world?

RB: Some great things have come out of being so vulnerable actually. It has allowed me to process the questions I get from the crowd with my therapist and journal through the “whys”. LOL I also find that we’re all a lot more alike than we are different. While trafficking is extreme, we all can relate with feeling betrayed, tricked, stuck in positions and situations that we’re uncomfortable with and don’t know how to navigate, we’ve all been embarrassed or ashamed of decisions we’ve made. When we can open up and be vulnerable, it allows us to feel united in empathy.

PTW: You’ve been through an immense amount of trauma as a result of your experiences. What has the recovery process been like, and how have you practiced self-care throughout your healing process?

RB: Healing from any trauma takes time. It is about being easy on yourself when you make mistakes and celebrating every step along the journey. Getting into a good therapist, finding rhythms of rest and renewal and getting it on the calendar has been crucial.

PTW: Imagine you get to build a toolkit of five things to take out into the world, to get you through any situation. What would be in your toolkit?

RB: Like survival mode? Water purifier, Knife, Rope, tarp, wool blanket. I think I could try to survive with those. LOL!

PTW: What are your favorite pieces of media right now?

Instagram is my favorite place to hear new ideas, find fun and inspiring reels and see people’s lives who I am not near.

Tik Tok is probably a close second for me because I follow a lot of comedians.

PTW: You started Elevate Academy to help survivors build life skills after being trafficked. The program seems to be based around group discussions and community formation, alongside skill-building. What is the importance of community in your life and for survivors in general?

RB: The school is really about our classes and curriculum. It is held in cohorts where survivors get to know they are not alone and build community all around of the world of other like minded survivors who have lived through really similar traumas. The community of knowing you are not the only one, you are not “crazy” that “this feeling” is normal, or this hurdle is “normal” can feeling really freeing and validating!

PTW: For people who care about fighting trafficking, but who may not know how to help, what can each of us do to help bring an end to human trafficking, and additionally, how can we work to break down misconceptions surrounding the issue?

RB: We would love to encourage everyone to take our Find Your Lane quiz to find how their specific personality aligns with ten different ways to get involved. We also really encourage people to get to know the facts about trafficking. There are so many misconceptions and sensationalism out there - follow and reshare quotes and facts from experts not just influencers, learn the red flags so you can filter through sensationalism and Find Your Lane; from as little as talking the kids in your life about the warning signs of grooming to fully getting involved in social impact with your company, to working or volunteering at a nonprofit, there are ways for all of us to do something!

PTW: Do you have a piece of advice or words of encouragement you’d like to share with other victims or survivors?

RB: Keep going. Don’t give up on your healing, your journey toward your dreams, don’t let shut doors or setbacks stop you - KEEP GOING! It gets better, it gets easier and you will never be in the same place you are in right now if you keep moving forward.

Why do you care? I believe that each of us have a passion and purpose inside of us and I want to see each person accomplish those dreams and live a full and rewarding life.

Why do you share? To sound the alarm so others don’t live through what I did.

Why do you wear your values? I wear the things that matter to me because it is like keeping it on me at all times not only as a great reminder and conversation starters for others, but when it’s with me, I know what matters, its right here and I feel proud to represent the important things in my life.

Mariella Satow: Game-changing Entrepreneur

Mariella Satow is the Founder and CEO of SignUp Captions, a Google Chrome Extension that overlays sign language interpretation on streaming platforms. Originally, SignUp was created to be a tool for students of American Sign Language (ASL), but Mariella soon realized that it could benefit the Deaf community as well, especially children. Over the past year, SignUp has been featured by The Times, BBC, and Variety among other news platforms, and has plans to launch in other countries in 2022 and 2023.

C: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself, briefly explain what exactly SignUp is, and describe how and why you decided to create something like this?

M: My name is Mariella Satow, I am eighteen years old, and I am the Founder and CEO of SignUp. SignUp is a Google Chrome Extension, overlaying sign language interpretation on streaming platforms. SignUp was founded because many people from the Deaf community find written captions in-descriptive, too fast, or even absent from media sites. A 2017 study showed that 80% of children who signed face challenges with reading – making written captions inaccessible.

C: How do you think your own experience with ASL has helped to shape the mission and purpose of SignUp?

M: I started learning sign language two years ago and started talking to people in the Deaf community. I learned more about Deaf culture and realized that closed captions do not work for everyone. Most people think that closed captioning represents the gold standard of accessibility. Children, especially, often have difficulty reading them. After a year of research, polling the Deaf community, and holding focus groups, I developed a Google Chrome extension to overlay a sign language interpreter on Disney+ movies. I could not have created SignUp without the help of the Deaf community I met during my time learning ASL.

C: Can you explain the process of 'getting the ball rolling' in terms of attracting attention to SignUp? Was there a specific publication or headline that you would consider a breakthrough?

M: I started the site with money that I made from walking dogs, but now we have a GoFundMe that provides funding to pay our 100 interpreters. I hired my first interpreter and technology developer from a freelancing website. Overnight, we had 15,000 hits to our website, and I woke up to an article in Yahoo! Finance, which was amazing. From there, SignUp had more and more organic press coverage, which has helped our growth immensely.

C: Do you have a favorite moment or memory from your time working on SignUp? A favorite interaction with one of your interpreters, maybe, or a really positive reaction from one of your consumers?

M: I love receiving any message that includes something along the lines of, “my kid understood their favorite movie for the first time.” I think it is amazing that SignUp is allowing kids to have full access to classic films.

This testimonial, in particular, is one of my favorites:

“I just wanted to send you a message and thank you for the amazing gift you’ve given my Deaf children. I have five kids, three hearing and two Deaf, and my Deaf kiddos always miss out on what’s going on for family movie nights. We surprised our 6-year-old daughter on her birthday with Zootopia with the interpreter, and her jaw dropped. I’m so impressed how you’re able to do this at 17, you’re going to change the world! Thank you for the wonderful gift you’ve given to D/HH children (and adults!)” – Dana S.

C: So far, SignUp is predominantly for kid's movies. Are you thinking of expanding to movies for all age groups, or do you think your platform will always be mainly for children? In what ways to you next plan to expand SignUp?

M: This year (in 2022) we plan to launch in Canada, Australia, the UK, India, and Pakistan. It turns out that there are more than 300 types of sign language worldwide! We have launched on Disney+ and Netflix, and we are working on translating more movies on Hulu and Amazon Prime, and we have just signed a contract with PBS Kids. We are planning to provide more teen and grown-up content, as many of our users are adults.

C: What advice would you give to any budding entrepreneurs who might be interested in starting their own business or brand?

M: First, thinking about a community that you are a part of, or know a lot about is a great start. Then, researching the problems the community face and brainstorming something that could help them is a good way to think of a product or service that is needed or wanted. One of the best pieces of advice I received when formulating the idea of SignUp, was that ideas can be made a reality, even with a small budget. SignUp was started on a shoestring budget, and the app was not fully polished when it launched. If you have a good idea, just go for it!

Lila di Florio & Bracie Aston: High School Entrepreneurs and Changemakers

A few weeks ago I sat down with Lila Di Florio and Bracie Aston, Co-Founders of the Youth for Health Organization. The Youth for Health Organization strives to “build a youth movement that amplifies initiatives addressing pressing healthcare issues threatening communities.

H: First, tell me a little bit about yourselves.

LDF: Hi my name is Lila Di Florio and I am a junior at the Spence School in New York City as well as the Co-Founder of the Youth for Health Organization. I have been really interested in science and healthcare all of high school!

BA: I’m Bracie Aston and I am a Co-Founder of the Youth for Health Organization. I currently attend the Spence School in Manhattan, New York. I’m in the graduating class of 2023, and I hope to make a positive impact in our world as I grow and learn. I am extremely passionate about helping those in need, and how businesses can develop more equitable, sustainable, and humanitarian business models. I also love art, fashion, and sports, all of which play a big role in my creativity and work.

H: How did you come up with the idea and 'Mission for Youth and Health'?

LDF: Bracie and I started this social enterprise in response to the Covid crisis we were first faced with in 9th grade. We felt that many of our classmates and peers wanted to help the brave healthcare workers saving thousands of people in our city, but many of us didn’t know how. That is what inspired Youth for Health- we wanted to create a product that many people in our community would want, but that would also benefit the healthcare workers struggling every day. We thought what better than to create hoodies, as everyone is at home and in hoodies always!

BA: The impact of the Coronavirus global pandemic inspired me to help others around me. As New York has been an epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, and because my father, Sherrell J Aston MD, works in the medical profession, the experience of being so exposed to the immediate effects and consequences of the virus is what originally inspired me to take action. As I watched the courageous efforts of those on the front lines fighting the virus, as well as the patients who struggled with symptoms, I was inspired to take action. Funny enough, Lila had the same thoughts.

H: What is the significance behind the name "Youth for Health"?

LDF: We chose the name Youth for Health because we wanted to energize the youth in our community to enact change in the healthcare field by buying our hoodies or reading our website.

BA: The name Youth for Health really means that our goal was to create a movement. We didn’t want it to be solely focused on fundraising but also on awareness about helping those in need access important materials and resources. By wearing a name and creating a brand, you encourage people to do more research and become more aware of the true mission of the charity and what is really going on in the world. I have struggled with aspects of my own personal health and felt that it was important to raise awareness about all aspects of health. I recognize that many people are unable to receive the healthcare they need, and I am eager to be able to provide assistance. I believe that joining together the youth of diverse communities is extremely important so that we may unify and aid one another. The youth of today is the future of tomorrow, and it is important that we work together to create a better world. Health is a central part of everyone’s lives, and I hope that by founding this organization, we can come to the assistance of those in need. I am extremely grateful for everyone who has helped Youth for Health launch, as well as everybody who continues to support our charity.

H: What is the creative process behind the sweatshirts?

LDF: Creating the hoodies was definitely a trial and error process! The team came up with a color palette we felt our friends would like the most, then Bracie got to work tinkering with the designs and I sought to find out what store would be the best option to order our hoodies from. We are so happy with how the final results came out!

BA: These sweatshirts were all designed with the intention of marketing directly to teenagers. The graphics were all digitally designed by myself, which certainly took lots of time and effort to create. Lila ensured that the quality of the fabrics and fit of the sweatshirts were perfect and helped to finalize all the designs.

There’s a lot of rock and roll inspiration in the design elements, paired with modern lines and neon flare. We honestly were hoping that these designs would appeal to our target market and be something that would genuinely sell and be worn. We also offered a Custom Tie Dye option to the white sweatshirts which was very on-trend during the Pandemic. Adding the Youth for Health logo was very important to bring more awareness to the brand.

H: What are your hopes for youth for health going forward?

LDF + BA: As the world opens back up into a “post-pandemic” world, there are still many without access to vaccines, masks, and more. We hope to provide funding to help those in need access these materials and to advocate for getting vaccinated which is critical to the safety of everybody.

Jacqueline Corbelli: Warrior for Social Change, Mother, and Media + Tech Entrepreneur

A few weeks ago I sat down with tech entrepreneur and CEO Jacqueline Corbelli to discuss her experience in the fields of business and technology. Corbelli is the CEO, Founder, and Chairman of BrightLine, a company focused on creating “advanced TV”, as well as the CEO and Founder of the US Coalition on Sustainability. Throughout her lengthy experience in the world of business, Corbelli has strived to be a “part of the solution” in everything she has done.

L: To start, tell me a bit about yourself and what you do.

J: My name is Jacqueline Corbelli and I’m a mom, media and tech entrepreneur, sustainability and social change warrior, runner, golfer, art and theater lover, film producer, and painter. I’m CEO, Founder and Chairman of BrightLine, as well as CEO and Founder of a nonprofit organization called the US Coalition on Sustainability.

L: How did you get to where you are now? What has your career trajectory been like?

J: I’ve spent my entire career operating at the intersection of business, technology and change management. I spent over a decade leading corporate-wide change management efforts in the financial services industry, followed by two decades building my technology company, BrightLine, the market leader for connected TV ad solutions.

I’ve always had a passion for approaching life as a piece of art, created over time, guided by my truth. At some point in my career, I felt compelled to re-engage with my calling to be “part of the solution.” I was deeply inspired by Jeffrey Sachs’ book, The End of Poverty, which was the first time I came to know about the Millennium Villages Project, an integrated economic development program designed to address extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. Jeff’s conviction around breaking the cycle of poverty through a top-down and bottom-up approach literally mirrored my personal experiences and prior successes with tackling the challenge of driving holistic and highly complex organizational change in the private sector.

Through a series of fortunate events, I had the opportunity to work side by side with Jeff and eventually had the privilege of overseeing the Millennium Villages Project during its final five years of implementation (2011-2016). Through this work I developed a ground-level understanding of the vast complexities involved in effecting world change – and directly observed the basic disconnect that exists between what those considered leaders on the world stage were asking of the private sector to change its ways and businesses’ lack of clarity on how to translate that operationally in order to deliver those outcomes.

Altogether, these experiences created the impetus for me to create the US Coalition on Sustainability and SustainChain.

L: What inspired you to create the US Coalition on Sustainability?

J: Through the Millennium Villages Project, I also had the wonderful opportunity to meet Amina Mohammed, who is now Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations. Having both worked in the private sector and spent time together in the trenches of African development, we connected on the necessary ingredients to creating a more economically and just world, especially the essential role of business in being a force for good.

As someone who has been operating at the intersection of business, technology and change management for decades, I realized the “template” already exists to create a capability for the private sector to accelerate their progress on sustainable development. At the urging of Jennifer Gross and the Blue Chip Foundation, Amina, Jeff and others, I created the US Coalition on Sustainability and SustainChain™.

Built during the height of the global pandemic and launched in 2021, SustainChain uses advanced digital technologies to bring together the innovation, investment, and public-private sector alliances needed to rebuild business supply chains and achieve sustainability.

L: What do you see as the role of the private sector/businesses in sustainability?

J: It’s easy to blame the private sector as the biggest part of the problem. But I believe there’s a powerful way that businesses can come together based on a common desire to contribute to the solution, and a different clarity on ‘how’ to do so.

As we continue to see unprecedented growth in organizations that are making sustainability a priority, there needs to be a neutral place where the integration of dialogue and action can occur outside the day-to-day silos. That’s what SustainChain is all about.

In just a year since its launch, more than 1,200 users have joined SustainChain, which validates our core hypothesis: that organizations need and value access to each other, relevant opportunities to combine or learn from other initiatives, new partners, and innovative solutions that can further their individual and our collective progress.

L: What do you think is the role of technology to drive change across supply chains?

J: We’re continuing to see the use of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across consumer and industrial applications – things like electric vehicles, smart cities, agricultural production and so much more. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

At the US Coalition on Sustainability, we’re harnessing the power of artificial intelligence and machine learning to unite sustainability efforts across industries, sectors, and organizations of all types and sizes. What if these players had instant visibility into the actions, products, solutions, and partners best aligned with their priorities and goals? The technology behind SustainChain enables us to do just that. In short, it creates a ‘smart’ automated way to go farther, faster, together.

L: What are the keys to success for system-based change?

J: It’s about acknowledging and seeing that there’s an interconnected system to the way things work, which means it can be modified. Like all big and complicated things that need to be solved, it starts with breaking down the system into individual components to then isolate the blockers to change – then focusing on not just ‘what’ is a blocker but also the process behind ‘how’ to neutralize or eliminate that blocker. SustainChain was designed to bring stakeholders of all types together and standardize key attributes (like industry, priority, role) to zero in on the blockages and use machine learning to help guide the ‘how’.

L: Why do you think it is important to give back?

J: What drives me – and what has driven me since I was young – is that the world can be made better if we’re intentional about how each of us can contribute our talents and skills toward changing what’s not working. I’ve figured out over these years that I have a knack for taking on big problems, allowing myself to believe I can improve them, and producing outcomes that are considered ‘additive’. I feel deeply that we receive blessings like this in order to give back.

L: What is a piece of advice you would give to your younger self and to Gen Z?

J: You can stay true to who you are while enduring what feels painful or against what you believe, for a time. Most of my biggest learnings have come from enduring some pain – for example, working long hours is unhealthy if we’re not conscious of how long we’re allowing ourselves to endure them, but hard work also equates to a commitment to mastery and building your practice. Growth comes with a little pain sometimes, so don’t reject it outright and actively reflect on what it gives you the opportunity to build upon.
